Is It Time to Replace?
Most garage door problems are worth fixing. Replacement starts to make more sense when:
- The door is 20 years old or more and something new breaks every year.
- Several sections are dented, cracked, rusted through or rotting.
- Parts for it aren't made anymore, so a damaged section can't be matched.
- It's a thin, uninsulated door on an attached garage that's freezing in winter and hot in summer.
- You want a different look for the house.
If it's one broken part on a door under about 15 years old, fix it with a repair.
What Gets Replaced
A replacement is more than a new door slab. The new door gets new tracks, new springs sized to its weight, new rollers, hinges, cables and weatherstripping, so the whole system is new and matched. The old door and hardware get hauled away. If your opener is in good shape, it can usually stay. If it's old or loud, it's a good time to swap it as well.
