Try a New Battery First
If a remote that used to work has stopped, replace the battery before anything else. That fixes it more often than not. If the remote only works up close, that's usually a weak battery too.
Programming a Remote Yourself
On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers:
- Find the Learn button on the opener motor head, usually under the light cover or next to the antenna wire.
- Press and release it. A small light next to it turns on.
- Within about 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote you want to use until the opener lights blink or you hear two clicks.
- Test it.
The color of the Learn button tells you which remotes will work with that opener, so check it before you buy a replacement. Other brands use different steps, so check the label on your opener or the manual.
Lost Remote?
Holding the Learn button down for several seconds erases every remote and keypad code on most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. Then reprogram the ones you still have. Do this if a remote was lost or stolen, or when you move into a new house.
When to Call
If the remote won't pair, the opener may use a radio signal that remote doesn't support, or the receiver in the opener may have failed. Built-in car buttons can also be fussy, and some newer openers need an adapter to work with older car systems.
